Role Overview

The Code Enforcement Officer I is an entry-level position focused on investigating and enforcing City codes and ordinances. You will perform field inspections to address nuisance abatement, property maintenance, and zoning violations. This recruitment via Government Jobz will create an eligibility list for current and future vacancies.

Key Responsibilities

• Respond to complaints regarding dangerous buildings, illegal land use, and urban blight.
• Conduct neighborhood sweeps and address issues like graffiti, trash, and abandoned vehicles.
• Investigate illegal operations (marijuana grows, gambling sites) and homeless encampments.
• Document violations using photos/video and issue administrative citations.
• Testify in court and administrative hearings as a City representative.
• Research property ownership and coordinate with agencies like Child Protective Services or Mental Health.

Requirements & Qualifications

Candidates applying through Government Jobz must meet the following criteria:

• Education: High School Diploma or GED.
• Experience: 2 years of experience in rule enforcement or field investigations. (30 college units can substitute for 1 year of experience).
• License: Valid California Driver’s License.
• Certifications: Must obtain PC 832 (Arrest, Search & Seizure) and either ICC or CACEO Basic Certification within 12 months of hiring.

Examination Process

The selection process may include an oral exam or an evaluation of training and experience weighted at 100%. A minimum score of 70% is required to pass. Ensure your application on the City of Stockton official site is complete, as “Refer to Resume” is not accepted.
