Key Responsibilities
Inspectors ensure safety and compliance by reviewing construction work and building materials against state and local regulations.
- Interpret California Building, Electrical, Plumbing, and Mechanical Codes.
- Conduct site inspections to verify permits and zoning compliance.
- Review building plans, site layouts, and technical specifications.
- Cite violations, issue stop-work orders, and gather evidence for compliance cases.
- Explain technical codes and energy requirements to contractors and the public.
Minimum Requirements
To qualify for these Government Jobz, candidates must meet the following education and experience criteria:
Inspector I
- Education: High school diploma; apprenticeship in building trades preferred.
- Experience: 2 years in construction trades, building inspection, or investigative enforcement with a public agency.
Inspector II
- Education: High school diploma plus technical/college courses in building trades or law enforcement.
- Experience: 3 years of professional building compliance or public agency investigative experience.
- Certification: ICC or CACEO certification required (Inspector I must obtain within 2 years).
Physical & Safety Demands
Candidates must be physically capable of field work, which includes climbing ladders/scaffolds, crawling through attics or under floors, and walking on roofs. A valid California driver’s license is mandatory.
