About the Role
As the Chief Assistant Public Defender, you will act as the Assistant Department Head, reporting directly to the Public Defender. Your mission on Government Jobz is to manage daily office operations, develop administrative plans, and lead serious legal cases. You will oversee a budget of approximately $20.5 million and lead a dedicated team of 62 positions.
Primary Responsibilities
- Assist with departmental administration and policy development.
- Manage budget development, personnel, and contract administration.
- Supervise, train, and evaluate staff performance.
- Conduct complex jury trials and act as senior counsel.
- Liaise with criminal justice agencies and community organizations.
Requirements

- Experience: 7 years of broad experience in criminal or civil law, including 2 years in law firm management/supervision.
- Bar Membership: Current, valid membership in the California State Bar.
- License: Valid California Class C driver’s license.
- Background: Ability to pass a thorough fingerprinting and background check.
