Primary Responsibilities

- Apparatus Operation: Driving to alarms, spotting apparatus for maximum efficiency, and operating pumping/hydraulic systems.
- Maintenance: Performing inspections, cleaning, and minor repairs on specialized equipment.
- Emergency Response: Protecting life and property through firefighting, rescue operations, and providing ALS/BLS medical support.
- Leadership: Serving as Fire Officer in their absence and assisting in the training of personnel.
Promotional Requirements
To qualify for the examination process through Government Jobz, applicants must meet these MFD standards:
- Employment: Must be a current City of Milpitas employee.
- Experience: 3 years of paid full-time experience as a Firefighter in Milpitas (up to 1 year may be credited from another municipal agency).
- MFD Specific: Successful completion of the MFD Acting Engineer Program.
- Certifications: Valid EMT-1 or EMT-P, Firefighter Endorsement, and completion of Driver/Operator 1A & 1B.
The Examination Process
Selection is based on a rigorous multi-phase assessment:
- Written Exam (25%): Tentatively scheduled for the week of March 16, 2026. Minimum 70% to pass.
- Practical Assessment (75%): Tentatively scheduled for the week of April 19, 2026. Focuses on manipulative exercises and equipment evolutions.
- Fire Chief Interview: Top candidates from the eligibility list will be invited to a final one-on-one interview.
