Government Jobz presents an exciting opportunity for a permanent, full-time Recreation Specialist I (Therapeutic Services) with the City and County of Honolulu. This role supports inclusive, city-wide therapeutic recreation programs for people with disabilities.

What You Will Do

  • Program Planning: Assist in organizing and monitoring inclusion-focused, city-wide recreation programs.
  • Staff Consulting & Training: Advise personnel on accessibility, observe participant social skills, and design staff training for therapeutic programs.
  • Community Coordination: Partner with agencies to build recreational opportunities and manage information referrals.
  • Operational Support: Create promotional materials, recruit volunteers, run events, build reports, and travel island-wide.

Special Working Conditions

Expect frequent travel across O’ahu. The role requires flexibility to work evenings, weekends, and holidays, and you will serve as a disaster response worker during emergencies.

Minimum Qualification Requirements

Applicants must be a U.S. citizen, national, permanent resident, or legally authorized alien.

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in recreation, physical education, group work, or related fields. Substitution: General experience can replace the degree year-for-year (e.g., 4 years of general recreation work or professional work in any field).
  • Experience: Two (2) years of professional recreation experience, including one (1) year specializing in planning or directing therapeutic recreation programs for individuals with disabilities. Substitution: An accredited Master’s degree in recreation, physical education, or education can replace one (1) year of general experience, but cannot replace the therapeutic specialty year.
  • Licenses & Certificates: A valid driver’s license is required before appointment. First Aid, CPR, and AED certifications (Adult, Child, Infant, and Choking care) must be obtained before completing your probation.

Required Competencies and Skills

Knowledge of supervisory principles, training techniques, public relations, and group behavior. Candidates must be able to lead others, evaluate local community leisure needs, motivate community support, and draft clear technical reports.
