Launch a rewarding career in student transportation! The Garden Grove Unified School District (GGUSD) is offering an intensive, unpaid training program to prepare candidates for school bus licensure. Government Jobz is proud to highlight this pathway, which often leads directly to substitute driving positions starting at $28.75/hr.

The Training Journey

Selected candidates will undergo rigorous classroom instruction followed by behind-the-wheel training once a Commercial Class B Permit is obtained. Find more education-related career paths on our main portal.

  • Classroom Phase: Covers bus operation, Motor Vehicle Code, First Aid, and Education Code.
  • Testing: Trainees are scheduled for the California Highway Patrol (CHP) rules and regulations exam.
  • Licensure: Behind-the-wheel training begins after obtaining a Commercial Class B Permit.
  • Costs: Approximately $250 in out-of-pocket fees (DMV, CHP, and Department of Justice).

Career Progression

Trainees who successfully complete all phases and obtain their license will be considered for Substitute Bus Driver roles. These positions provide flexible hours and act as a primary stepping stone to permanent, benefited roles within the district.

Requirements to Join

  • Experience: One year of experience operating a motor vehicle (safe driving record is mandatory).
  • License: Must possess a valid Class C California Driver License.
  • DMV Record: Must provide a recent (within 30 days) original DMV K4 printout with the application.
  • Age: Must be at least 18 years old.

Serving a Diverse Community

Driving for GGUSD means supporting a vast student body. Our district serves one of the most culturally rich populations in Orange County. According to the 2024-2025 GGUSD Student Profile data, the student population (approximately 37,000+ students) includes:

Student Group Percentage of Enrollment
Asian (largely Vietnamese & Korean) 54.2%
Hispanic or Latino 34.1%
White 7.8%
Other / Two or More Races 3.9%

Your role as a driver ensures safe access to education for all these students, regardless of their background.
