Duties Summary: Assists in the supervision and participates in the operation and maintenance activities in a Class III or IV wastewater treatment plant and lower classed plants in a district, as well as its related tributary pumping plants, equipment, and facilities; and performs other related duties as required.
- Assists in the supervision and participates in the operation and maintenance of pumps and auxiliary equipment to control the flow of wastewater, air, and sludge through the various stages of the treatment process.
- Supervises and participates in reading, recording, and interpreting data from meters, gauges, and other recording devices to maintain or improve plant operations.
- Supervises and participates in the inspection of plant and mechanical equipment for malfunctions, irregularities, and needed repairs; participates in lubricating, changing oil, repairing, and making adjustments to machinery and equipment; paints equipment, building, and other plant structures.
- Supervises and participates in the operation of chemical feed systems; collects samples and performs chemical and physical laboratory analyses; maintains records and prepares various operational reports.
- Participates in the preparation of work schedules and work assignments for the maintenance and operation of the wastewater plant and pumping stations.
- Participates in evaluating employee’s job performance; recommends approval or disapproval of leaves; prepares timesheets and periodic operational reports on man hours expended, materials and equipment used, and work status.
- Participates in the training of employees; explains policies, departmental procedures, and applicable laws; advises operators on wastewater treatment procedures and techniques, and the proper operation and maintenance of the equipment and plant.
- Supervises and participates in the investigation and resolution of complaints.
- Submits requests for tools, equipment, materials, and supplies to supervisor; makes recommendations for various needs during annual budget preparation.
- Enforces and complies with all Federal, State, and County laws, regulations, and policies relating to occupational safety and health; takes precautions to safeguard facilities and equipment and maintain a safe working environment.
- Operates a motor vehicle to transport personnel, equipment, and materials.
- Responds to emergency calls.
- Attends training seminars, workshops, and conferences to meet continuing educational requirements.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Training and Experience: A combination of education and experience substantially equivalent to:
- Experience of sufficient scope and quality to competently perform journey level duties of a Wastewater Plant Working Supervisor IV, and
- Possession of a valid permanent Hawai’i Mandatory Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator IV Certificate at time of filing (scan and attach a copy of your valid certificate to your application), and
- Possession of a valid State of Hawai’i driver’s license (Class 3) or any other valid comparable driver’s license at time of filing (You will be required to submit your valid driver’s license at time of hire.), and
- Possession of a good driving record certified by a traffic abstract confirming no DUI convictions, license revocations, or suspensions for three (3) years preceding and no moving violations for one (1) year preceding. A current traffic abstract is valid for 30 days from date of issuance by the district court. (You will be required to submit your current traffic abstract at time of job interview.)
1. A current Department of Transportation Medical Examiner’s Certificate is required prior to appointment.
2. A valid State of Hawai’i driver’s license (Class 4, non-CDL) is required prior to completion of probation.
Examination: All applicants who meet the minimum qualification requirements will be assigned a score of 70 points. An education and experience evaluation will be conducted based on the applicant’s training, education and experience as presented in the application.
Note: In-person interviews and/or further testing in Hawai’i County may be required at the discretion of the hiring department/agency. If in-person interviews and/or further testing are required, applicants who are referred to the hiring department/agency must be available to participate in person and at their own expense at that phase of the selection process.
